First of all, I'm Kate! I've been a blogger for a lot of years and have a bunch of different blogs all around, under different names with different themes. I've recently re-activated my Jane Austen obsession by watching this hilarious movie, Austenland, for the first time. It was my first time seeing it and the movie was spectacular! Although a little over the top, it was funny, romantic and totally worth the watch.
While getting back into the Austen theme, I remembered just how much I love the Pride and Prejudice story and thought, oh hey, I've seen almost every version of Pride and Prejudice out there, why not write a blog post on which Darcy I like most? Here's the thing, Although all the Darcies are charming, romantic and alluringly attractive, there are only two which I feel most drawn to, and sadly (I know I'm going to get some haters out there by saying this but..) Colin Firth isn't one of them. Well, if he were on this list he'd be number 3, but since I'm only going to be writing about two.. I thought I'd just leave him out. Don't get me wrong, I do like him.. just not as much as these other two I'm about to mention.
Today.. it's Pride and Prejudice's 2005 version Mr Darcy - Mathew Macfadyen vs Lost in Austen's 2008 version Mr. Darcy. Which do you find more likable? More attractive and which one plays the part better?
Candidate #1 - Mathew Macfadyen
I think I gravitated toward Mathew more because his charisma really seems to out-due himself and his Darcy is just so.. well, this Darcy seems like more of a romantic than Colin Firth to me. Either way, his silky voice, his slow mannerisms, his calm, collected attitude, and of course, his adoration for Lizzy is just outstanding. Mathew as Darcy does a spectacular job in both acting cold and warm. At first, his aloof attitude was almost hard to watch. In the beginning when he was speaking to Mr. Bingley at the ball about Lizzy,
"She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me, and I am in no humor at present to to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men."
His harshness was indeed astounding and rather infuriating! Of course, this is because he are coming from Elisabeth's point of view in which she is being disregarded. This moment however, i do believe is one of my favorites because even in the very beginning, Mr. Darcy shows some attraction to Elisabeth and thus these words are his... better judgement, rather than some emotion that may be blooming.
And of course, our beloved proposal #2 scene..
This moment, as any mother was just the sweetest, most romantic, confession of love there ever was. And although I would bow at the feet of Austen were she still living, I also most acknowledge these actors for being able to full off such complex characters.
The, I want you to stay with me but I wont say it directly, scene.
Going back a while, this is another of my favorite scenes, I think it's because Darcy is leaking his affection for Lizzy little by little and this is a moment where he truly wants her company but she's rejecting it so severely.
And then there's the dance. Now this moment, I believe, is probably one of the most intimate moments in this movie. It's like.. this scene has so much tension between the two and yet so much attraction.. It's hard to differentiate.. But ahhh, it's such a nice moment, I love this movie :3
Dance to the sound of tension
And now.. let's get to Elliot Cowan, shall we? It was very hard, when I first saw this movie, for me to choose which Darcy I liked more. I tend to be rather choosy and I'm the type of person to compare everything I have lain before me. This isn't a good thing but it's how my brain works, non the less. This Mr. Darcy was my favorite for the longest time. I watched and re-watched and re-re-watched this movie so many times I don't even remember how many times it was I saw this movie.. Of course.. the story was silly and great, as well, but.. this Darcy was just freakishly charismatic.
Candidate #2 - Elliot Cowan
Goodness, I do love this movie. Elliot Cowan's charisma is so overwhelming sometimes. And to think, this is the moment when the fictional characters come to life and a real life person gets him. How lucky is she? Now if only the Mad Hatter or someone else with maddening charisma was brought to the real world.
What of Lizzy?
Despite his hostility, Darcy's warm heart and caring nature for his sister and those whom he cares greatly for is so lovable. This is another aspect as to why I very much like this Darcy. He gives off the perfect air of hostility and aloofness, and yet he's so passionate and considerate. Love this moment.
That charisma, though..
"For my good opinion is lost forever."
The most well known line from this book/movie..
And the moment we have all been waiting for~ Darcy's confession.. although it isn't spoke, his actions prove confession enough. Between the two Darcy's, it's still hard to pick.. they're both so charismatic and likable in their own ways.
Reading the book and watching the movies and the spin-offs each and every one of them have their own touch but all uniquely different. despite the number of times I've tried to compare and decide which Darcy I most favor, I still have yet to come to a conclusion. What about you guys? Prefer a Darcy? Perhaps, Collin Firth? Or maybe you just like the book and aren't a fan of any of the movies.. I can understand and almost relate to that. Please vote!
Feel free to vote!
